Listening And DoingWe should work on:
a) Following directions: use a minimum of two stage directives.
b) Auditory memory: recall a minimum of three items.
c) Listening for specifics: select item from group based on other information already acquired.
d) Listening for sequence: identify and recall items in seriation.
For these activities all four skills are used.
1. Dismissal lists; no repeats! Choose from colors, animals, shapes, etc. Chose the topic. The teacher calls on the first child. She says: "camel," next child has to name another animal and so forth until all the children are lining up. This activity helps for an orderly dismissal.
2. Follow instructions. Start with very simple instructions and go increasing in complexity. Say the directions only once. With younger children you should start with one instruction at the time and only increase when the children are ready for it. E.g. "walk to the door, open the door, sit down;" or "go to the window, close the window, go to your place."
3. Distribute one blank piece of paper and one pencil to each child. Tell the children to:
- fold the paper in half, open it.
- How many spaces do you have?
- On the first half, write your name.
- On the second half, draw your face.
- Turn the paper around and draw a big X in the middle
4. Distribute one blank piece of paper and one pencil to each child. Tell the children to: - Fold the paper in half.
- Open it.
- How many spaces do you have?
- On the first half write 3 numbers.
- Circle one.
- On the second half draw one triangle, one circle and one square.
- Put an X on any one.
5. Distribute one blank piece of paper and one red and one blue pencil or crayon. Tell the children to:
- Fold the paper in half.
- Fold it in half again.
- Open it.
- How many spaces do you have?
- In the first space draw a blue circle.
- Put a red dot in it.
- In the second space draw a red triangle. Put a blue circle around it.
- In the third space draw a blue rectangle above a red square.
- And in the last space, draw a red circle below a blue square.
